March marks the month in which women are celebrated and advocated for, known as Women’s History Month. How did this month come to be?
Well, it all began with International Women's Day, a movement that took root in the early 20th century. This day, initially celebrated in various countries on different dates, gained momentum as women rallied for equality, better working conditions, and the right to vote. The first National Women's Day was observed in the United States in 1909, and in 1911, it became an international event.
Fast forward to 1978, when a group of determined feminists in California lobbied for a week-long celebration dedicated to women's history. They succeeded, and in 1980, President Jimmy Carter proclaimed the week of March 8th as National Women's History Week. But why stop there? The enthusiasm for recognizing women's achievements was contagious, and by 1987, Congress expanded the celebration to encompass the entire month of March. Thus, Women's History Month was born!
Since then, Women's History Month has grown into a global phenomenon. IcLucy wants to celebrate women's achievements and resilience through struggles in every field – from science to politics, this month through a series or articles to come.
As we embark on this journey through Women's History Month, let's raise our voices, amplify women's stories, and continue the march toward equality and justice for all.
