Importance of Obesity Awareness in Children

Khalid Al Sumait

Kuwait is rated as one of the top countries suffering from childhood obesity. Obesity is considered a complex disease that puts the child under the threat of many major health problems like heart disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure. Preventing obesity can happen by introducing strategies in early childhood that will help reduce it. 2 in 4 children in Kuwait are obese, this is due to a limited amount of physical activity, unhealthy eating habits, and lack of parents awareness.

I believe that Kuwait’s hot weather play’s a big role in limiting the choices of outdoor activities. When the weather becomes hot in Kuwait, it becomes difficult to practice any outdoor activity like biking, walking , football, or even playing in a playground. To approach a fast food restaurant became very easy for adults and children. This is due to promoting many delivery platforms, like Deliveroo, Talabat, and Carriage. It made it very easy for kids and their families to access the platforms based on their efficiency, speed , delivery, and reasonable prices.

Both public and private schools don't promote sports programs. Students who participate in schools sports not only have the opportunity to maintain good physical health, but it also increases confidence and selfesteem which many obese kids lack. This will allow the students to exercise and use more of their energy throughout the day. School’s in Kuwait should start to provide students with healthier lunches. For example, in most school’s cafeteria they mostly provide pizza, cookies, and french fries. They should consider giving students more healthy meals including protein bars, bananas, salads, and yogurts. These types of food can give the student a lot of energy that can last them the full day and make them focus better during class. Students, parents, and schools should work together to fight the growth of obesity, and should be dedicated to improving the students' lives.
